Anti-nutrients The nutrient Busters
Many people incorrectly assume they get adequate nutrients from the food they eat. Unfortunately, in todays world it is virtually impossible to get the necessary nutrients to sustain a healthy body and mind by just eating modern foods and drinking liquids.
This means that everyone must look at choosing the right food they eat, organic if possible, and supplementing their diets with multivitamins and minerals to assist in the journey to optimum nutrition.
In an ideal world this would be adequate, but very few people realize that modern lifestyles and current eating habits introduce anti-nutrients into our bodies that deplete nutrition. Modern food is devitalized by man made chemicals, pesticides, contaminants and food processing. These nutrient busters prevent nutrients from being absorbed or used by the body and in some cases promote their excretion. Many modern day diseases and deaths are not only caused by a deficiency of nutrients but also because of an excess of nutrient busters.
Most cancers, for example, are associated with an excess of anti-nutrients, like chemicals and free radicals resulting from smoking.
Unfortunately our lifestyles dictate the extent to which we are exposed to these nutrient busters. It is essential for us to reduce the exposure to anti-nutrients by assessing our lifestyles and the environment we live in, so we can fully understand how to manage this gigantic onslaught of nutrient busters and change our lifestyles accordingly.
How big is the problem ?
There are more than 3,000 man made food chemicals and over 20,000 pesticides registered in the US. American agriculture is reported as using 2.2 billion pounds of pesticides annually, that are used on more than 900,000 farms. The UK is reported as using 250,000 tons of food chemicals a year and 400 million litres of pesticides and herbicides sprayed on to food crops, pastures and surrounding areas. In addition billions of cigarettes and alcoholic drinks are consumed in the UK, not to mention the millions of antibiotics, pharmaceutical drugs, recreational and street drugs taken, and the industrial pollution of more than 50,000 chemicals pumped into the air every day.
Its no wonder we have health problems.
In his article The Amazing Human Being, Richard Penfounde starts by saying,
Human beings are the only creatures on earth that:
smoke tobacco
consume processed foods
drink coffee and tea copiously
eat fried foods continuously
drink cow’s milk throughout our lives
add sugar to our foods and liquids
add salt to our foods and liquids
continue to eat when we are not feeling well
consume social and medicinal drugs
We are the results of the products that we put in our mouths and often those that we do not put in our mouths. Our bodies are eventually shaped and our skin conditioned by these processes over a period of time. Every disease takes time to develop, often 20 or more years. Disease in our body varies from mild to moderate to serious and the progression is often so slow that it is not recognised at the time that it is happening.
The major Lifestyle nutrient busters
As optimum nutrition is the key to a healthy body and mind, we must be aware of how each of our lifestyles expose us to anti-nutrients and subsequent diseases and death.
The main problem is that these nutrient busters build up in the body, slowly over time eventually resulting in one or other serious disease. So before its too late, we must prevent this from happening by having regular check ups and appropriate tests. Richard recommends that it is very important to start a regimented optimum nutrition programme as soon as possible to start combating the nutrition busters onslaught.
You may also, depending on your specific circumstances, look at other appropriate tests like the hair-mineral analysis, food-tolerance tests, vitamin blood tests, the functional homocysteine test and a cholesterol test to establish your risk and to see if you have any specific disease symptom or nutrient deficiency.
For each of us to do a proper analysis of our lifestyles, we must however understand what these nutrient busters are, and make the necessary lifestyle changes to minimize or eliminate them.
Nutrient deficiency and depletion
There are many different nutrient busters that have negative affects on our bodies which can contribute to disease and death. Each contribute in a different way to the depletion of the nutrients we require to achieve and maintain optimum health.
Together with these anti-nutrient activities we must also understand that even refined foods that do not have man-made chemical additives or anti-nutrients, often contribute to nutrient deficiency as they do not have sufficient quantities of nutrients to sustain the body and mind. It is estimated that half of most peoples diets consist of these refined foods which means that the other half of their diets have to make up the full nutrient requirement. This isnt always possible or the case, for most people.
The result of all of this is that it is essential to be aware of these conditions and to eat according to our individual nutrient requirements, but more importantly to change our lifestyles to avoid nutrient busters where possible, and then to supplement the nutrients through our diets and an appropriate optimum nutrition supplement programme containing multivitamins, minerals, anti-oxidants, essential fats, phytochemicals and amino acids.
This is the only way to achieve optimum health.
So lets look at the major nutrient busters.
Lifestyle, taking into account the effect of the following:
o Living in a city or near an industrial area
o Eating fast foods regularly
o Smoking cigarettes
o Drinking alcohol
o Taking recreational or street drugs
o Taking birth control pills
o Taking antibiotics regularly
o Limited or no regular exercise
o Limited sleep
o Highly stressful lifestyle
The environment we live in, taking into account the effect of the following:
o Traffic pollution, time spent in heavy traffic
o Industrial air and water pollution
o Drinking water contamination
o Pesticide and herbicide utilization and distribution
o Living or working in a smoking environment
The food we eat, taking into account the effect of the following:
o Man made food chemicals, additives, preservatives and food colouring agents
o Genetically modified foods
o Consumption of fast foods, fried foods and fatty foods
o Food processing using heat
o Food browned or burnt using heat
o Fruit and vegetables contaminated by pesticides and herbicides
o Foods wrapped in PVC plastic film
o The consumption of tea, coffee, sugar, salt and alcohol
o Household drinking water from taps
The drugs we take taking into account the effect of the following:
o Pharmaceutical drugs and antibiotics
o Recreational and street drugs
o Birth control pills
The exposure to nutrient busters depends on your specific lifestyle and therefore defines the activities you need to take to minimize or eliminate the exposure, to assist in achieving optimum nutrition.

The Food And Drink Of James Bond
Among the big differences between the 007 books and the films are that while 007 is hardly seen to eat in the movies – he is well known for downing booze though – Ian Fleming’s novels often include exquisitely described meals that are a highlight of Ian Fleming’s prose.
Even so, Bond isn’t an out and out snob, and even though he does enjoy good food served in fancy restaurants, his favourite meal undoubtedly is scrambled eggs on toast with bacon. This he is able to eat morning, noon and night and Fleming went as far as featuring a recipe for scrambled eggs within his short story, 007 in New York.
Bond also finds fine dining sometimes rather pretentious and Fleming claims that whenever in England he exists on a diet of grilled sole, oeufs cocotte and cold roast beef with potato salad; Bond himself claims to prefer the ordinary plain food of the country when abroad.
Bond’s favourite meal during the day is breakfast, which we realize because Ian Fleming told us. It was also Fleming’s own favourite meal time – his view that people yearned for uncomplicated, childish foods and breakfast provided exactly that.
While Bond sometimes does order scrambled eggs in the morning in the novels, his routine while in London is rather simpler; he drinks two cups of coffee from De Bry in New Oxford Street (sadly it doesn’t exist any more) brewed with a glass Chemex coffee maker while reading the Times.
He is then served an egg that has been boiled for exactly three and a third minutes by May, his elderly Scottish maid, that is served in a dark blue egg cup ornamented with a golden band round the top. The egg comes from French Marans hens and is supplied by an acquaintance of May. After the egg, he eats toast and butter served along with Tiptree’s Little Scarlet strawberry jam, Norwegian Heather Honey from Fortnum and Mason and Cooper’s Vintage Oxford marmalade – all is served on blue Minton china.
Nonetheless, when in foreign lands his breakfast can vary. In New York he calls room service to order orange juice, three lightly scrambled eggs with bacon, toast and marmalade and a double espresso with cream, which hardly differs from his home breakfast. But when on assignment in Istanbul he orders a much distinct breakfast; yoghurt and green figs with Turkish coffee.
Where we do see evidence of 007 enjoying the “plain food of the country” when he lunches on ham sandwiches with plenty of mustard (in an English pub) or bread and sausage (when tailing Goldfinger through France), he also eats exceptionally well.
Certainly one of the most unforgettable descriptions of a meal happens when he dines with M at his private members club, Blades. Following vodka coming from Riga, Bond requests Champagne to go with his asparagus and hollandaise sauce, lamb cutlets with buttered peas and new potatoes, plus a slice of pineapple for dessert. This episode features in Moonraker, published shortly after rationing had ended in the uk and while it may not appear to be especially spectacular to contemporary readers, the books provided wish fulfilment for the audience of the day.
Devon Hogroasts, Hog Roasts in Devon, UK – How to Cook a Perfect Pig
The popularity of hog roasts in the UK is undeniable. There’s nothing better on a warm summer day than to gather with friends and family while a succulent pig roasts slowly on a spit. Here’s some information about hog roasts in Devon that will help you bring off your event without a hitch.
For a “Wow” Factor, Choose Spit Roasting
It’s nothing short of spectacular to be invited to a hog roast in Devon and arrive to see a whole pig, seasoned to perfection, rotating slowly on a spit over a charcoal or wood fire. Even hog roast weddings are exceedingly popular. Spit roasting is an ancient cooking technique. For a pig roast, the horizontal spit bar should be about 70 inches in length. To facilitate attachment of the meat, most spits have moveable crossbars to which the meat is attached. The ends of the spit bar fit into uprights that are adjustable to move the pig closer or farther from the fire. A strong motor rotates the pig slowly.
How to Prepare the Carcass for Spit Roasting
You can leave the stomach cavity open or close it according to your preference for the hog roast. Regardless, for extra flavor, rub a seasoning mix onto the interior surfaces of the pig rather than using just plain salt and pepper. Citrus flavors are particularly complimentary to pork, so try a mixture of 1/4 cup lemon or lime juice, 1/4 cup orange juice, 3 tablespoons of good quality olive oil, 6 cloves of garlic, put through a press or very finely chopped, 3 tablespoons of coarse salt and 2 teaspoons of freshly ground black pepper. Finally, score the skin all over with a sharp knife in a criss-cross pattern. This will allow more fat to render during cooking. Wrap the thinner parts of the pig, such as ears and snout, with aluminum foil so they do not overcook.
Roasting the Pig
The secret to succulent spit-roasted pork in hog roasts in Exeter or Devon is slow, even cooking. The rotating spit takes care of the “even” part, but you’ll have to monitor the heat to assure slow cooking. A temperature of 350 F is ideal. To test the temperature, hold your hand, palm down, at the same distance from the fire as the pig will be. If you can hold it there for 8 to 12 seconds, the temperature is correct for spit roasting. Test for doneness by inserting an instant-read meat thermometer into the thickest part of the thigh. A temperature of 165 to 170 indicates that the meat is fully cooked. Allow 6 to 10 hours for pigs that weigh from 60 to 125 pounds. Remove the foil during the last hour of cooking. Your UK hog roast is now ready to enjoy!
Hog roasts in Devon, UK are great events for young and old alike. Why not try your hand at this crowd-pleasing spectacle for your next special event?
Advanced Carp Fishing Baits — Carp Essential Vitamins For Maximum Attraction And Nutrition!
Vitamins are ESSENTIAL proven TOP carp attractors and additives! *
Vitamins are essential for healthy carp and this applies whether they are commercially farmed or wild carp! Farmed carp are given a vitamin supplement mixture, usually combined with the essential minerals and trace elements that are also required for optimum carp growth and weight gain.
These nutrients are essential to a carps health, growth, and sense of well-being. They may exist in an environment rich in natural food, possibly supplemented frequently with anglers baits. But if a carp is deficient in a particular nutrient even like one essential vitamin, it may well eat your bait instinctively to fulfil that dietary need!
* The vitamins most essential to carp, and carp baits based on carp nutritional trials:
Vitamin A (IU with antioxidant effects,), A (RE) also has antioxidant effects. Vitamin B1 (thiamine), B2 (riboflavin), B3 (for growth), B5, B6, and B12. Other B vitamins are responsible for metabolism of amino acids and fats.
Vitamin C is for good digestion and antioxidant effects. D, E (an antioxidant,) H (for blood cell formation), K (for blood clotting.) Then there are vitamin M, niacin, folate, pantothenic acid and inositol.
All these can be excellent carp attractors, being essential for a healthy carp. They are either included in your bait by using ingredients that are rich in them, or by adding a vitamin supplement in powdered or liquid form.
Seafoods are very rich in vitamins, such as the easily digestible crustacean oils. Fish liver oils, like cod liver oil, are an excellent supplier of vitamins A and D, and these are fat soluble. Seafood has good levels of niacin, particularly water-soluble B vitamins, including B12, B6 and thiamine. (They are also an excellent sources of minerals!)
Vitamins, minerals and trace elements are best used in fresh, natural form for the best absorption and synthesis in the carps body. A few successful commercial spray-dried fruit juice baits have been designed around vitamin C, and it is a very important, essential vitamin to carp.
Like vitamin E, vitamin C has protective antioxidant properties; very healthy! Carp seem to love these. In aquaculture feeds, vitamin C is phosphorylated (stabilized with phosphorous,) so getting the best from this important combination of phosphorus and ascorbic acid!
Carp need vitamin C especially, and in carp rearing stew ponds, where algae are not available vitamin C is especially supplemented for healthy carp growth. A Spirulina phytoplankton, (blue-green algae,) is commercially produced used as a supplement!
Vitamin D has a possible role in calcium absorption in carp. Deficiency of vitamin E in carp has been caused by excessive oil levels in carp baits in some UK fisheries; carp liver damage was the result! Sadly, many UK anglers have seen many big carp with a bulging body, where the carps liver has been damaged and swollen.
Fish meal baits have dominated the UK bait scene for 20 years plus. More anglers are adopting a more bulk oils in my bait, equals more fish on the bank mentality. But this is a very damaging to fish!
* Fat levels and carp induced vitamin E deficiency:
Fat levels incorporated via the dry base mix, especially containing high-fat, oily fish ingredients, are often enough to satisfy basic carp dietary needs. Overloading with fish derived, or, bulk food, or fish feed inducing, or other oils, can be detrimental. The recommended usage rates are 15 to 30 milliliters maximum per pound of dry boilie base mix.
Pure salmon oil is particularly recommended, especially for lower ware temperatures in the winter. This is because this oil has extremely healthy effects on the body and processes of the carp, and is very easily digested.
* Other carp essential vitamins and their sources:
B vitamins are listed repeatedly in commercial feeds. Often its B1, B6 and B12. This seems to reflect the carp catching success of carp bait ingredients which are high in these vitamins!
Brewers yeasts, deactivated bakers yeasts, and yeast extract, are excellent sources of B complex vitamins. They also provide essential minerals and trace elements, and are very well proven attractors! Brewers yeast is, even used as an important food supplement in the health industry.
Yeasts are full of the palatability and taste enhancer, L-glutamic acid, one of the most abundant amino acids found in nature. It is also used in monosodium glutamate, another famous taste enhancer.
Pure (pharmaceutical grade) liver powder is another great source of B vitamins that catches carp extremely well; and it smells really pungent!
Corn steep liquor and molasses are often used in baits for their vitamin, mineral and trace elements nutritional attraction.
The proficient angler will often cover all nutritional bait angles over a range of baits and frequently in a single bait.! A single source of easily obtained, balanced nutrition, in boilie form is often most successful. It often has the long term edge in producing big carp captures over lower quality baits with little biologically available carp nutrients.
However, even a low food value boilie soaked in a mineral and vitamin supplement, will prove much superior to the same bait without! You too may well discover that minerals and vitamins are actually great attractors in their own right!
It has been observed that certain vitamins like niacin, vitamin B6 and B12, folic acid etc, and essential minerals, along with betaine and amino acids in baits, seem to promote very good results
The author has many more fishing and bait edges up his sleeve. Every single one can have a huge impact on catches. (Warning: This article is protected by copyright, but reprints with a link are OK.)

Best Practice Food Waste Management Guide By Skippy
In a recent survey published by Britains biggest supermarket Tesco, it was revealed that a staggering two thirds of food products go to waste. In the latest figures, it was found that 68% of all bagged salads produced in the UK are never consumed, 40% of apples are never eaten and nearly 50% of all bakery products end up in the bin.
Managing Food Waste For A Sustainable Future
It is estimated that every year in the UK we waste 7.2 million tonnes of food, costing households 2.5 billion. The results of a number of pre and post consumer factors, these food waste figures reflect poorly on both the public and retailer.
Last month it was reported by Global Food Security that up to 40% of farmers crops were wasted as they never made it to store. As supermarkets insist on certain demanding standards and overproduction in the case of a bad harvest, there is little room for adjustment in the current system. Whilst standards for fresh produce have been set by Defra, most of the ugly fruit and veg standards are set by the retailers themselves.
Between 2007 and 2010, annual food waste fell by approximately 1.1 million tonnes, showing substantial progress in an area in which we seem to have made very little. This is a great step forward for food waste management in the UK, and a sign that the food recovery/waste hierarchy can be adhered to and achieve results.
Understanding How To Manage Food Waste In Your Business
To fully understand the problems associated with sustainable food waste management, we must first establish the buying and consumption cycle. This includes:
Food Who we buy it from and what we buy
Solid Waste Food and packaging
Water Usage and emissions
Energy Equipment and buildings
People Outreach and social equity
Once a framework has been identified, individual aspects can be built upon in order improve food waste management in all industries. Following the waste management hierarchy, food waste can be controlled and managed to minimise or avoid waste entirely.
The efficient management of food waste is just as important as any other aspect of your waste production. A contributor to landfill, there are number of benefits to sustainably managing your food waste. These include:
Saving Money It you can effectively manage your food waste; you can save money on all the associated costs including, disposal, labour and energy.
Helping the Environment Sending waste to landfill or incineration results in an increase in carbon emissions. From food transport and storage, to disposal, all aspects of the food chain can be reduced in order to improve waste management.
Community Engagement By reducing your food waste and managing it in a sustainable and efficient way, you can engage with staff, visitors and the public by showing your progress in food waste reduction.

Exotic Cuisine Taste a new part of the world
When faced with the thought of cooking an exotic cuisine such as Indian, Chinese, Thai or Turkish, many of us may prefer to shy away and stick to what is familiar, believing that such cuisines require a substantial amount effort and are probably best left to the experts.
However this isnt always the case, and while the task may seem daunting, there are many benefits to venturing into the unknown and cooking cuisines from around the world.
Firstly, cooking an exotic cuisine presents a great opportunity to branch out and try something new; you can transport your taste buds to faraway lands and relive those holiday treats, without the need to pack a suitcase. Why not make an evening of it and have a themed dinner party with your friends and family? Delving into a new cuisine is something you can have fun with, experiment with and be proud of when serving up the finished product.
Secondly when cooking your own dishes, you know exactly what goes in and how much. The Consensus Action on Salt and Health (CASH) organisation carried out research into the salt content of supermarket curry dishes and takeaway meals. They found that some contain up to 7g of salt per portion, more than the daily recommended intake for adults, which certainly doesnt do your heart any favours.
According to research carried out by Mintel in 2010, more consumers are becoming increasingly able and willing to turn to scratch cooking for better value and a more authentic tasting meal. This has helped the availability of exotic ingredients to become more accessible. Local supermarkets often provide a one-stop shop for all of your ingredients and there are also the smaller specialised shops dotted around for the more specific ingredient requirements, many of which can deliver to your door.
However some countries not only use ingredients that are specific to their culture, but some also use equipment and utensils that are specific to them. For instance Chinese cooks tend to use Woks and chop sticks, whilst Moroccan food is often cooked in tagines.
But once you are equipped with your ingredients and the correct equipment, the process of actually cooking these exotic cuisines is not as difficult as you may think, as long as you follow some simple rules.
Firstly you must remember that each world cuisine involves different cooking techniques. For example Indian food requires good timing, to ensure that the meat is cooked through and remains succulent, but also an understanding of how to blend the correct spices and flavours together.
However Chinese cooking involves techniques such as stir frying, deep frying, steaming, boiling, thickening and producing stocks, whilst Turkish cuisine involves the art of stuffing vegetables, fish, fruit and meat. Once these basic techniques have been learnt and understood, there is no end to the variety of dishes you would be able to produce.
So next time you are in the supermarket and come across the exotic food aisle, why not take a look and see what exciting and unusual foods they have on the shelves? And if you do not have a clue what to do with them then there are many cookery courses available throughout the UK to teach you the techniques you need to surprise your friends and family with a truly delicious and exotic meal.
