Dried Flowers From Your Food Dehydrator

This article is about preserving flowers, leaves, and other foliage from your garden, yard, or bouquet, in a food dehydrator, thus extending their beauty in flower arrangements that will last to, and through, the winter months, or even beyond. Here you will find simple steps on drying flowers with a food dehydrator to produce a potpourri of color and fragrance.

The starting point is the selection of flowers. I use flowers throughout the following explanations but it includes other foliage that can be dried as supplements to a wreath, or any other dried arrangements that the imagination creates. Flowers, selected for drying, can be anywhere along the bloom but not past the point of full bloom. Do not use bloom that is damaged, by blight, insects, wind, or withered. If the flower has been subjected to pesticide, or dirt, it can be sprayed with a pump type mist sprayer, similar to one of the window cleaner sprayers, then gently shaken to remove as much water as possible. Never use detergents, or cleaner sprays.

Most food dehydrators have trays that are inch apart, that provides plenty of clearance if drying flower petals, or leaf type foliage separately, but for drying a complete floral bloom remove one or two trays, on the drawer type dehydrators, to accommodate an entire flower. The trays should be clean. I have lined the trays with parchment paper, but many food dehydrators have non-stick sheets available that fit their drying shelves. You need room when drying flowers keeping them spread out so as not to touch each other causing discoloring or distortion. A thermostat on the food dehydrator should range between 100 deg F and 140 deg F. Flower petals will dry well around 100-120 deg F for 2 to 5 hours.

The Importance Of Food Handling In Ensuring Food Safety

When I started my first year of college, I got a job at the university food court. I was hired to be a cashier, and I hardly handled any food at all. So, I was surprised when I learned that I was required to take a class and a test in order to receive a food handler card. The class was held in a downtown government building and was about an hour long, and in those sixty minutes, I learned more than an enough to convince me of the importance of food safety. Even as a cashier, there was a possibility that I might touch food, and I needed to know how to make sure the customers’ food did not become contaminated as a result of my negligence.

Every year, thousands of people get food poisoning from eating contaminated food caused by improper sanitation or preparation. In fact, more than 250 known diseases can be transmitted through food, and all it takes is the wrong temperature, a small cough, or some unwashed hands to start the spreading of these diseases. And beyond the hundreds of known diseases that can be spread through food, the Center for Disease Control also estimates of that the unknown illness and hospitalizations (for which the cause cannot be directly identified), 81% are caused by food poisoning, due in part to improper food handling.
Food poisoning can be caused by infectious agents or by toxic agents. Infectious agents include viruses, bacteria, and parasites.

These infections can appear in your food if the people handling it are sick and don’t wash their hands, if they store the food in unclean areas, or if a contaminated substance (such as money, which is covered in bacteria, or raw meat) comes in contact with your food.

Cooking Brisket in the Oven – A Beginners Guide

Did you know that at one time, brisket was considered a very poor quality meat? History has it, that two brothers from Germany, back in the 1950’s decided to smoke up some leftover brisket they had. They left the brisket inside their smokehouse for an entire weekend. When they returned to work they sliced up the meat and served it to their customers. The meat was so flavorful and tender that it quickly became a hit.

I remember the first time I had the pleasure of eating beef brisket. It was at this fabulous little Barbecue Restaurant in Croton-On-Hudson, NY called Memphis Maes.

New York isn’t known for its BBQ, so my wife and I were a bit skeptical. But after we took our first bite of the “Texas BBQ Beef Brisket”, we became believers! My wife then looked at me and said , “You have to make this!” Not wanting to let the lovely wife down, I took it upon myself to try and recreate the BBQ brisket at home. I don’t own a smoker, so I needed to improvise and cook the brisket in the oven.
