Culinary Delights and Culture from Birmingham Serviced Apartments-00-4062

The Library of Birmingham couldnt be more different from its predecessor, the Birmingham Central Library – a Brutalist concrete structure that is a labyrinth of corridors and escalators inside. The new library, which is due to be finished in the summer of 2013, is a glass building, colourful and full of light, and will certainly be a more contemporary and attractive addition to Birminghams cityscape.

It will also be much more than a library. The new building will share a reception and box office desk with the Birmingham Rep Theatre, and within the building there will be an outdoor amphitheatre, music centre, exhibition gallery and a gilded 10th-floor Shakespeare pavilion. Supporters of the library hope that it will show other libraries how to adapt in response to an ever changing, digitalised society.

The new library is just part of a cultural and architectural regeneration that has made Birmingham a thriving centre of business and innovation. The Bullring, which was completed in 2003, and the office developments in Brindley Place and other canal-side locations have helped to make Birmingham an attractive place to locate a business. This has been supported by innovations in business accommodation; in particular, there are now a number of Birmingham serviced apartments in the centre of the city. Some of these, such as the serviced apartments in the Rotunda building, make the most of Birminghams heritage by restyling old architecture with contemporary furnishings and facilities.

Birmingham is one of the UKs most populous cities, but its importance as a cultural destination is often forgotten. The city is home to a number of theatres, as well as one of the countrys oldest cinemas, the Electric Cinema, and fascinating areas such as the Custard Factory where local artists have set up individual shops and cafes. This is another facet of the city that makes it an attractive location for business visitors, and because the city centre is easy to get around on foot, the serviced apartments Birmingham has to offer are all within easy walking distance of these attractions.

Staying in a Birmingham serviced apartment also allows guests to enjoy Birminghams many and varied culinary delights. Although its famed for its balti houses and traditional pubs, Birmingham also has a number of high-end restaurants, from French bistros such as Chez Jules to the Indian fusion restaurants that line Broad Street. A number of farmers markets are held across the city each month and the area is dotted with delicatessens and food shops, from independent stores to larger shops such as Selfridges. Living in one of the serviced apartments Birmingham has to offer allows business travellers to buy food in the city centre and cook it in the privacy of what feels like their own home. They also, of course, have the option of eating out in one of the citys many restaurants whenever they choose.

The Caterer A Perfect Blend Of Business And Culinary Skills

When you go to a wedding reception or party, you expect to fill your plate with mouth-watering food. The food provided by caterers can make or break a big event. If you love creating great, stylish menus, then catering might be the culinary career for you.

Catering 101

Caterers are hired for a variety of events, including banquets, conventions, office luncheons, and openings. They’re responsible for designing, preparing, and serving the menu, and emphasis is put on both presentation and flavor. Caterers rely on word of mouth to keep their businesses going, so the best caterers know you only get one shot at making a great impression.

A Day in the Life of a Caterer

The first order of business for a caterer is meeting with clients to plan the event and work out all the necessary details. Good listening skills are essential to helping clients get what they want, and a caterer suggests foods that go well together and makes the event as stress-free as possible.

Once the menu is planned, the caterer is responsible for making sure the event runs smoothly.

* Pricing. The caterer negotiates the budget, usually priced per-person.
* Preparation. Depending on the location, the food is either prepared on site or transferred from the caterer’s kitchen.
* Serving. The food can be served buffet style or at dining tables. The caterer is responsible for setting up the dining area, and making sure the appearance of the food and tables are appropriate for the event.
* Management. The caterer is responsible for managing the entire cooking and serving staff as they wait tables and clean up when the event is over.

Getting the Job

Over 70% of catering businesses are owner run, and a business plan is essential to getting started. The start-up costs range from $1,000 to $80,000, and on average, caterers have six full-time employees, with the rest of their staff working on a temporary basis. Overseeing event operations can be complicated, so a caterer must have business savvy to match their culinary skills.

Because this culinary career is so business-oriented, a degree in business or restaurant management could be a great asset. Food preparation experience is also necessary, and some caterers open their own businesses after spending years in the restaurant industry. Another option is to attend a culinary school, where you’ll receive both business and culinary training. Caterers must be certified by their local health departments to ensure sanitary cooking conditions and safe equipment.

Catering is the fastest growing segment in the food industry, and annual sales are between $6 and $8 billion. A caterer can expect to make between $23,000 and $200,000 a year, although large companies that specialize in black tie events can make much more.

On the Job

Catering an event gives you a chance to show your style, and when Sean Driscoll started Glorious Food in 1971, his production background gave him an advantage. Driscoll was considering a career as a film director, but he gave in to his culinary whims.

Driscoll’s goal was to rival fine dining restaurants in quality and service, and rather than creating a set menu, he followed food trends and used seasonal items to design new and exciting dishes. He relied on the knowledge that many struggling actors also have experience as waiters and went to casting directors to recruit his wait staff.

Glorious Food now earns an estimated $12 million a year. The company is constantly in demand, and they’ve catered star-studded charity events and parties for the New York City Ballet and the Museum of Modern Art.

Catering requires a challenging combination of business and culinary skills, but it can give you a chance to design spectacular and memorable events. If you’re looking for a culinary career that allows your creativity to shine, catering might be perfect for you.

Focusing On Activities In Lake Chapala, Mexico

OkayI get so annoyed when people say theres nothing to do in Lake Chapala during what we Lakesiders consider the low season, April-Septemberyou knowwhen the Canadians go back north for the summer. I just want to say, what planet on you on? No, theres no Little Theater and the concerts could be few and far between, but none of us have to sit around if we dont want to.

I was recently trying to get in contact with Marianne OHalloran about the Quilting Guild. I finally found out why she was so hard to get in touch with when she emailed me back, The guild is somewhat active totally new people running it. I go to some meetings; they have downsized but do have some new members this summer. Im still quilting like crazy but also doing stained glass, cooking for CASA [Culinary Art Society of Ajijic, a group that’s been tickling our taste buds since 1986], joined ASA [Ajijic Society of the Arts] and am a Cruz Roja volunteer (Mexicos Red Cross], etc., etc. Its been a little crazy this summer. And I went to Saudi for two weeks last March and had a great time. Quilt Festival in Houston comes up in two months in October.

Goodness, she makes me feel like such a slacker! She also was kind enough to share Ill be home quite a bit for the next 4 or 5 days as Im probably getting a new cat tomorrow that hopefully will get along with my other. I guess with her busy schedule, she needed to get a companion for her other sweet kitten! There are at least three pet shelters here that rescue dogs and cats for adoption. Youll never be lonely as long as there is a pet to love!

And, me, Wow, when I think back to when I was working in Kansas City, and I wanted to write and had dreams of being a photographer, and now here I ama published author in both the English-speaking publications here (and was a finalist for an award with the Ojo del Lago!) and have had the honor of having my photographs in the finals for the cover of the Lake Chapala Review three years in a row. In 2007 I won the contest, and now, this year another of my photos is appearing on the cover of the August 15, 2009, issue. We are so living the life! You know, since moving here in 2004, I feel as if both of us have gotten younger! I remember, at times, feeling so old and tired in Kansas City!

I have also noticed that some of the people who move here sit back and wait for life to come to them.

Excuse me, but was that what you did back home? Did you sit in your house waiting for someone to knock on the door? And, how did that work out for you?

Did you then move here thinking all that would change? Why? You know, if you want friends, you have to be a friend. You have to get involved with the community. Thats what the people who are enjoying life here are doing!
They do things like go to the dog shelter and walk dogs not only for their health but the health and well-being of a homeless dog. They help out at Pasos Milagrosos (riding therapy for handicapped children), they become Amigos at Hope House and help out at Love in Action (orphanages for boys and girls). They get outside themselves and dont sit around whining about why they dont have more friends!

Okaymy rant is finished! I just want to confirm something I know you already knowvery rarely does Opportunity come through your dooryou have to start the ball rolling.

Ever since we moved to the Lake Chapala area, Bill and I have sought out opportunities, which have turned into even greater opportunities. If Bill hadnt starting teaching tai chi at the Lake Chapala Society for free, he wouldnt have been offered work at one of the local health clubs in the area. If I hadn’t nervously submitted my first article to the Ojo del Lago for consideration, and then let them know about two-three months later that I would love to be considered for a position as their copy editor if their current one quit (which she did two months later!), Bill and I wouldn’t have met Ray & Marie Bullock and started on our new life with Focus on Mexico. If I hadn’t entered the photography contest for the Lake Chapala Review in 2004, I wouldn’t have two cover photos. We have friends who have never painted, but wanted to and now one of them is going to have a showing soon. I have a friend who took stained glass classes and now has some of the most beautiful windows I’ve ever seen in her casa. I’m jealous! But, of course, I don’t need to be…I could take the classes too! We have a couple of friends who never acted and have now been in plays at the Lakeside Little TheaterI want to do that too! So much to do! So many things to choose from!

There are so many service organizations like the American Legion, the Rotary Club, the Masons and Eastern Star, the Shriners and three Red Hat Societies that you certainly have a wealth of opportunities if thats your cup of tea. There are also many creative groups like our world-renowned Writer’s Group, the Lakeside Little Theater, the Garden Guild, the Needle Pushers (sewing projects benefiting low-income schoolchildren), and the afore-mentioned Culinary Club.
Have a talent you care share? The LCS Education Center provides classes in language and other topics for both the Anglo and Mexican community. LINK assists the foreign community with resolving any challenges in the Lakeside area.

And there are so many charitable organizations in the area that could use your help. Why belong to a non-profit organization? Since a lot of folks in our community are retired, they have more free time than they used to, and many are looking forward to putting something back into the community and making a significant difference. It’s also a great way to make new friends. But most importantly, you have a great opportunity to help those who are not as fortunate as yourself. I felt good just typing all of that! There are too many to mention here, but there are organizations supporting the very young (Ninos Incapacitados) all the way up to helping the elderly (Casa de Ancianos).

And, did I hear someone ask about Bridge? You want Bridge in Lake Chapala; we got Bridge in Lake Chapala! Recently when we dropped by the Lakeside Bridge Club, they had 57 tables going. We have contract and duplicate bridge and just plain ol I like to have fun and meet people bridge! We have dominoes and Scrabble clubs. And, if anyone wants to start a Pinochle Club, count me in. Oh rightI could start this one myself, couldnt I? Thats how the rest of them got started: somebody had an interest and found other people who liked the same thing. And, all this happened because they turned off their TVs, got out of their chairs, opened their doors, and searched through the many Opportunities available in the Lake Chapala area! Are you sensing a theme here?

I get so excited because there are just so many chances here to learn something new or get involved with the community that I’m amazed if someone feels left out! I’m so glad we got involved in the community…it’s so easy to do, and there are so many things here to tickle your interest. It’s such an exciting adventure for us to live in this new culture, and almost every day brings a new challenge and a new life-altering moment. I like to say I said ‘yes’ at all the right times. Theres never any reason for you to feel as if youre on the outside looking in. Cmon inyoull be glad you did!

However challenging, Culinary Artist Theresa Fehrsen has bravely stepped up to this challenge and is set to become the next Culinary Safari Chef Extraordinaire in her role as the new head chef at one of the most luxurious resorts in the Kalahari Desert.

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Cooking

Even the most experienced master chef is always willing to learn new things about the culinary arts. Knowing the right methods and techniques could turn ordinary or bland meals into spectacular feasts you will be remembered for. Gather as many tips and suggestions as you can as a means to improve your cooking.

In order to get the most out of your selection of spices, you should store them out of the light and heat. Exposing spices to heat, humidity, and light will shorten their lifespan. Store spices in a dark, cool location to keep them flavorful and fresher for longer. Your culinary preparations will taste better if your spices are fresh.

A great tip for using cooking oil is to ensure you pour it onto the sides of the pan, rather than directly in the pan’s center, so that it will be sufficiently heated upon reaching the food. Using this method can help you to boost the flavor of foods.

To make your French fries crispier, let the raw potatoes soak for about half an hour in cold water prior to frying. When your potatoes soak up cold fluids, their fibers are reinforced. This means that they will hold up better to the heat necessary for the frying process.

Nearly any recipe benefits from using fresh ingredients rather than the frozen or dried version. The more fresh ingredients you use in your cooking, the better your dishes will be. Fresh ingredients have more flavor, and are less costly than frozen and canned ingredients.

When you store flour, sugar or any type of baking mixes, always use airtight containers. Avoid exposure to moisture and insects by sealing food in airtight containers. Almost every store has some form of them, and they are usually inexpensive.

Lowering your oil amounts when cooking can help you have a healthier diet and lose weight. These products contain a lot of unnecessary fat. Nonstick cooking sprays are a great substitute which ends up giving you the same result except in a healthy way, as opposed to the oil which is unhealthy.

It is fairly easy to dry tomatoes yourself. Dry your own by slicing ripe tomatoes 1/2″ thick, or cut Romas in half, lengthwise. You should place them on cooling rack, and salt them lightly with the cut side up. Put a cookie sheet underneath the cooling rack and then set the pair in an oven heated to 190 degrees. Leave for as many as ten hours. The dried tomatoes can be put in plastic bags and frozen. Dried tomatoes could also be put in a jar with fresh herbs and topped up with olive oil. Dried tomatoes should be stored within the refrigerator and used within two weeks.

Make sure you thoroughly clean your utensils before starting to cook. Any residual food matter missed during washing can spoil the dish you intend to cook. This could lead to problems from bacteria being spread.

When cooking, it is always a good idea to get a little creative. Sometimes its okay to deviate from following a recipe step-by-step. Change up the recipe until you perfect your own variation. That type of cooking finesse make a genuine cook!

To give your pasta some added zip, save the water you use to boil the pasta. Use about a fourth of a cup for this tip. Put in some of the water when you mix the pasta and the sauce. The pasta water contains starch, which will give your sauce a thick creaminess.

When you are sauteing a food, make sure you do not add too much to the pan. The moisture that the extra food volume adds will cause the food to steam, which means it won’t be as crispy as intended. Also, make sure that this is done at a temperature that is low.

See to it that your herbs are stored in a dry, cool and dark area. Exposure to light, heat and humidity can cause them to lose a lot of their flavor very fast. In this location, the spices are exposed to heat that will cause their flavors to dissipate.
